Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. After her father died as a Carnival barker as a little girl, she had to help support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was raised in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. But she quit school in the span of two years in order to pursue an acting career. This was not an easy path to pursue. Although she got an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. As a hat check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. She made enough money with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
